Redford is both our mascot and our inspiration. A three year old tabby from a feral litter, Redford is totally blind due to an infection that ran through the litter. Yet, despite this lack of vision, he can navigate a complex area full of obstacles, hunt gophers and small birds, jump to the top of a wall and even play with a string. Redford set up the attack in the above picture from fifteen feet away, carefully stalking his brother until he was in a position to strike. This movie shows shows Redford playing in his yard. Watch his ears, he uses sound a lot. He also uses his knowledge of the terrain. He's much more comfortable in terrain he knows. Still, compared to Redford, it's interesting to think about what an autonomous vehicle should be able to do with even a primitive vision system.
